苦。Suffering

在这世界上，有乐就有苦；
乐是苦的因，苦也是乐的因，
所以我常说：『受苦是了苦，享福是消福。』
例如『十年寒窗苦，一举成名天下知』，
这是所谓『苦尽甘来』，但这个了是从苦恼换来的。
又好像种田的农人，现在用机器来种田，
没有出那么多的力量，但是需要汽油；
若是能源缺乏了，恐怕机器又行不通了，
又要用回人力，
这都是苦恼无量，不知道有多少苦恼。

In this world, wherever there is joy,
there is also suffering.
Joy is the cause of suffering.
Suffering is also the cause of joy.
So it is often said,
"Enduring suffering puts an end to suffering;
enjoying blessings uses up blessings."

There is an ancient Chinese saying,
"Suffering as a poor student for ten years,
as soon as one is successful,
one is famous throughout the land."
Another saying is,
"When suffering ceases, joy arrives."
But this joy comes from suffering.

It is like the farmer who tills the land.
he can use machinery now to plant his field,
and he doesn't have to expend so much effort.
But he needs gasoline.
If all the natural resources are used up,
he won't be able to use his machinery
and will have to return to manual labor.
Then he will have unlimited suffering, untold suffering.
